Second body recovered following truck crash in Tonga

The body of the second drowning victim was recovered from the Komati River today, March 30. 

The Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit recovered the body of the second drowning victim from the Komati River near Tonga this morning, March 30.

A truck had gone over a bridge on the Komati River in Tonga on Thursday afternoon, March 28.

Three people were in the truck, the driver, a crew member and a passenger. The vehicle was transporting sand when it slipped out of gear, rolled down an incline and went over the bridge into the water.

The driver managed to escape, however, the crew member and passenger went down with the vehicle.

The Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit’s Captain Pottie Potgieter said the passenger’s body was recovered on Friday, March 29.

The crew member’s body was found at 09:00 this morning about 60m downstream from the truck and was recovered.

SARZA Lowveld’s Andrew Geldenhuys, who was part of Friday’s recovery, said the recovery was extremely technical and dangerous.
