One pedestrian hit, five occupants killed in crash in Violet Bank

A pedestrian was hit by a light delivery vehicle on the R40 in Violet Bank, Bushbuckridge, leading to a crash with some other vehicles and ultimately the death of six men.

One pedestrian was hit and five men were killed in a collision between a light delivery vehicle and a VW Polo on the R40 in Violet Bank, Bushbuckridge, on Saturday evening, May 25.

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison’s spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, said the crash occurred at about 19:30.

He said the light delivery vehicle had hit a pedestrian, and the driver then lost control and collided with the VW Polo. The delivery vehicle further hit a minibus taxi travelling on the same road.

He said four of the men who died were occupants of the VW Polo, while the fifth victim had been a passenger in the delivery vehicle. Mmusi said the five men were all pronounced dead on the scene.

He said the occupants of the taxi sustained injuries ranging from slight to serious. All the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The pedestrian who was hit died while being transported to hospital.

Mmusi said an investigation into the crash is currently under way.
