Riba Cross lad to join Mamelodi Sundowns Development Academy

The gifted right-footed central defender is currently training with Burgersfort's amateur side, Underground FC.

A young local soccer player will be donning the colours of Mamelodi Sundowns next season.

Tukiso Makola (15) from Riba Cross in Burgersfort was spotted by the DStv champions’ scouts playing for Calvin College in the Kay Motsepe Schools championships in Polokwane on June 19.

Tukiso is a right-footed central defender.

“He is a marvel to watch, and is composed and experienced for his age,” said his mentor and coach at Calvin College, Eanest Mandishona.

He said Tukiso will be in the Masandawana Development Academy next year.

“After they had spotted him, he travelled to Peter Mokaba in Polokwane and to Chloorkop in Gauteng for trials. He succeeded on both occasions, and was among the four Limpopo boys chosen by the Sundowns’ scouts. What makes his achievement sweeter, is that Tukiso is the only player selected who is not from other soccer academies. He has only played amateur football.”

The mentor described the young defender as a disciplined and fast centre back.

“With good development, I believe he will graduate to being one of the best central defenders in this country.”

Mandishona said he first noticed Tukiso’s talent a couple of years ago.

“One day during break time, he was playing with his peers. After seeing him in action, I was convinced he was a gem. We introduced him to the school soccer team, where he played with boys older than him. He excelled and marshalled the defence excellently.”

Calvin College’s principal, John Kuriakose, wished Tukiso well.

“We are proud of him and Calvin College is convinced he will fly the school flag high.”

Tukiso is currently training with the local amateur side from Riba Cross, Underground FC.
