Weekend fire caution as Uitkyk area burns

Lefpa urges the public to avoid creating open fires until Monday.

The Lowveld and Escarpment Fire Protection Association (Lefpa) has issued an urgent fire caution for Mbombela from today, September 26 until Monday, September 30.

This as a large fire is raging in the Uitkyk area. Lefpa’s André Scheepers said fire fighters are tending to the fire and a helicopter has been dispatched to assist.

He urged the public to refrain from making any open fires while the hot, dry and windy conditions persist.

Severe wildfires have been sweeping across the Lowveld this winter, destroying swaths of land. In July at least 10 of the famous Kaapsehoop wild horses died as a result of these fires, while six had to be euthanised due to severe burn wounds.

Other highly affected areas include Bushbuckridge, White River, Mbombela, Barberton, Lydenburg, Sabie, eManzana and Machadodorp.
