Four people were killed in a multivehicle collision on the R104 between Nelsville and the Karino interchange in Mbombela earlier this morning, February 10.
The collision involved a bakkie and two Volkswagen Polos, of which one caught fire.

According to the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison’s spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, the two Polos were travelling from Karino towards Nelsville. The one in front collided with the bakkie and the other crashed into the first Polo from behind.
“The four victims were occupants in the car that initially collided with the bakkie. The deceased were burnt beyond recognition when the car caught fire on impact. The bakkie’s driver sustained serious injuries, while the driver of the other car escaped with slight injuries. They were rushed to a nearby hospital in Mbombela,” Mmusi said.
He said the investigation into the accident is already under way, although dangerous overtaking cannot be ruled out at this stage.

The Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Jackie Macie, has called on motorists to use the road cautiously to avoid deadly crashes. “Being safe on the road is every driver’s responsibility, therefore every person must comply with the rules and also exercise caution at all times while driving,” he said.
Macie sent his condolences to the bereaved families and wished those who were injured a speedy recovery.
