Woman killed with an axe in Schoemansdal

A swift investigation led to the arrest of the suspect.

A 41-year-old man has been arrested for the brutal murder of the mother of his children in Schoemansdal. The incident occurred on Monday.

The Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, said the suspect and the victim (31) were involved in a heated argument. It is alleged that the suspect attacked the victim with an axe, resulting in fatal injuries.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect and the victim have two children together. After the attack, the suspect allegedly left her lifeless body in the street. Police and other relevant stakeholders were summoned to the scene. A swift investigation led to the suspect’s arrest,” she said.

Ndubane also said the suspect is expected to appear in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court on May 14, facing a charge of murder.

The acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, strongly condemned this inhumane act. He urged members of the community to seek help when experiencing domestic or relationship problems rather than resorting to violence.

He emphasised that gender-based violence and femicide remain a serious threat to the safety and well-being of women and children in our communities.
