Man arrested in Calcutta for possession of hunting rifle

A suspect was arrested for possession of an illegal hunting firearm.

A 31-year-old man was arrested in the Calcutta near Hazyview in the early hours of Thursday, October 16, during a joint operation that focused specifically on illegal firearms.

According to the spokesperson for Calcutta Police Station, Sergeant Millicent Khoza, the arrest was conducted by members of an Ehlanzeni District operation in conjunction with the Calcutta Visible Policing unit.

“Teams received a tip-off regarding a suspect allegedly in possession of a hunting rifle in the Oakley Trust. The intelligence unit and law enforcement members responded to the location.”

Khoza confirmed that a hunting rifle and wild animal skins were found, and that the suspect was arrested. He is currently being detained and is expected to make his first appearance in court on Friday, October 31, to apply for bail.
