Senteeko Dam still unstable despite drop in water levels

Senteeko Dam’s water levels have dropped, but ongoing structural instability has led authorities to keep all safety notices in place.

Water levels at Senteeko Dam have dropped; however, the dam structure remains unstable. As a result, all previously issued notices remain in effect.

The De Kaap Irrigation Board said the approved professional person and the senior manager from the Dam Safety Office of the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) will conduct another site visit today, January 26, to inspect the spillway.

“Based on the findings of the site inspection, the DWS will issue a formal directive to the landowner, the Irrigation Board, and all individuals residing in close proximity to the dam. Please note that all stakeholders will be required to comply with the directive issued by the department,” said the board.

The board added that the DWS is aware that farmers are currently uncertain about the situation and require clarity in order to plan their farming activities.

The board will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
