Despite unpredictable weather, the Giant Blanket Picnic Valentine's Day celebration was a huge success.
More than 2 500 people, comprising both families and couples, braved the weather to celebrate love and friendship at the Giant Blanket Picnic event at Mbombela Stadium on Valentine’s Day.
According to the event organiser, Oupa Pilane, attendance far surpassed expectations.
He said the success of the picnic proves a strong desire for diverse entertainment, as the majority of regional events are music concerts.
“I am incredibly grateful for the turnout, especially as people knew it was going to rain. The event wasn’t just for couples; we saw many with children, as play areas were provided. It was wonderful to see families spending time together and socialising,” Pilane said.

The picnic also served as a platform for local entrepreneurs, with a number of small businesses selling their goods from stalls.
“We knew that while people were enjoying themselves, they would also want to shop. This was a great boost for local businesses,” explained Pilane.
He added that the day was not without its challenges.
A power failure at the stadium affected vendors, and the backup generator struggled to handle the load.
“Although we eventually managed to resolve the power issue, we know businesses were affected and we sincerely apologise.”
Pilane thanked all attendees for their support and said he looks forward to welcoming them again at future events.
