Hoërskool Bergvlam’s pageant finalists give back with Women’s Month initiative
Vlammies are collecting sanitary products to empower women and girls ahead of the Mbombela high school’s annual pageant.
“When you empower a woman, you empower a generation.”
These powerful words, inspired by an African proverb, have become more than just a theme for Hoërskool Bergvlam’s 2026 Mister and Miss Bergvlam (MMBV) finalists. This Women’s Month, they are turning those words into action by asking the community to help restore dignity to women and girls in need.
Drive launched
The finalists have launched a sanitary product drive in the lead-up to Women’s Day, encouraging learners, parents, local businesses and community members to donate essential feminine hygiene products. Every donation, no matter how small, can make a meaningful difference to someone who may otherwise go without these basic necessities.
Collection boxes will be available at the school’s entrance from 22 July to 7 August, while local businesses are also invited to partner with the initiative by contacting the school directly.
Although the glamorous Mister and Miss Bergvlam pageant is known for its dazzling evening wear, energetic choreography and crowning of new titleholders, community service remains at the heart of the competition. Every year, finalists take part in outreach projects that challenge them to look beyond themselves and make a positive impact on the lives of others.
“The finalists are exposed to opportunities outside their frame of reference, allowing them to discover and develop their humanity,” explain organisers Christelle Coetser and Simoné de Jager.
“Through these charitable projects, they learn compassion and gain a deeper appreciation for the needs of others.” The organisers hope this year’s campaign will not only benefit women in need but also inspire the wider community to become involved.
“We are excited to see how these finalists embody the school’s values, not only by building their own character, but by making a real difference in the community. Never forget that a small group of teenagers can change the world, one small gesture at a time.”
The big event is looming
The highlight of the journey will be the Mister and Miss Bergvlam 2026 pageant, taking place on 19 August in the school hall. With the vibrant theme “Feel the Colour, Move the Rhythm”, audiences can expect an unforgettable evening filled with spectacular fashion, impressive performances and plenty of excitement.
