The Lowveld Model Aircraft Club’s (Lomac) airshow returned on Saturday after almost a decade. With 64 model aircraft displays, 124 model aeroplanes and more than 1 000 attendees, the event proved to be a great return for the club.

Airshow showcases unique aircraft

The RC airshow, known for doing the famous ‘sweet drop’, had children waiting anxiously for their treats.
The show even featured a few exclusive model aircraft, such as the Gee Bee R3 and Sukhoi Su-30. The Gee Bee R3 is a fictional, modern fantasy aircraft concept inspired by the real 1930s Granville Brothers (Gee Bee) air racers.

The Sukhoi Su-30 model, which was flown by pilot Waiman Chan, is a twin-engine, two-seat super-manoeuvrable fighter aircraft developed in the Soviet Union by Russia’s Sukhoi Aviation Corporation in the 1980s.

“We originally planned to have 60 displays, but managed to get 64. We even got the Gee Bee R3 on display, which is the only one available in South Africa,” said Lomac Airshow organiser Alex Groenewald.

Future airshows in the pipeline

Aviation enthusiasts were entertained from beginning to end by the RC pilots’ impressive tricks, that ensured a spectacular show with many surprises.

“We are thankful to the community for the overwhelming support and hope to continue the airshow for the following years,” Groenewald added.
