R100 000 reward as Mpumalanga police hunt Marite tavern shooting suspect
Police warn that wanted suspect Phumulani Matsane is considered armed and dangerous.
Mpumalanga police are offering a reward of R100 000 to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest and successful conviction of Phumulani Ezekiel Matsane.
He is a suspect in the shooting deaths of two men at a tavern in Marite on May 15, 2023. The incident occurred in the Calcutta policing precinct.

“At this stage, police cannot rule out the possibility of his involvement in other similar cases that are under investigation,” said the Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Mavela Masondo.
Anyone with information about Matsane’s whereabouts is urged to contact Detective Lieutenant Colonel Madala Ndashe on 076 244 8577 or Lieutenant Colonel Freddy Magagula on 082 780 6815.

“All information will be treated with confidentiality. The public is advised not to attempt to apprehend the suspect because he is considered armed and very dangerous,” said Masondo.
The provincial SAPS commissioner, Lieutenant General Nkankoane Apaphia Modise, said police are working hard to deal with crime in the Calcutta policing precinct, including areas like Mkhuhlu where several murders have recently been reported.
The Calcutta policing precinct has recorded 39 gun murders since the beginning of the year.
