Dorah Mphethi has taken over leadership of Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) after a special council sitting at the Apel Regional Chamber on September 16.

Mphethi was elevated to the mayoral position from the chief whip position, which she held from July 2024.

She replaces Eddie Maila, who resigned on September 2 to lead the Limpopo health department as MEC.

Council leadership changes

Vincent Shoba will remain speaker of the council, while newly sworn ANC chairperson in Fetakgomo Tubatse sub-region Jeffrey Mashoeu is the new chief whip of the council.

The FTLM special council meeting was attended by former mayors Johannes Phokane, Josias Mahlake, Naume Phala, Maila and numerous other officials. Former FTLM council speaker Reneilwe Pholoane, who is now a Member of Parliament, and the Sekhukhune District Municipality executive mayor, Minah Bahula, also attended the event.

Service delivery and regional balance

In her acceptance speech, Mphethi acknowledged the work of previous FTLM leaders, adding that she plans to hit the ground running to ensure service delivery.

According to an insider within the Sekhukhune ANC, the top brass at the ruling party wanted a female leader to balance the Sekhukhune regional leadership.

“If the ANC wins the upcoming elections in the FTLM, Mphethi is expected to continue as the political leader at the municipality,” said the source.
