Security team arrests armed suspect at Mbombela bank

Officers recovered an licensed firearm after apprehending a man who allegedly targeted a bank employee he claimed was his ex-wife.

Collaboration between private security companies led to the arrest of an armed suspect following an alleged attempt to shoot an employee at the Plaza Complex in Mbombela on Monday, October 5.

The incident happened at about 15:40 at FNB, where the suspect allegedly attempted to shoot an employee believed to be his ex-wife. Reports indicate that she holds a protection order against him.

Joint security team responds

According to John Meintjies of ACS Spartan Security, officers on duty immediately called for backup after the incident was reported.

Armed response officers and a supervisor responded to the scene, together with Fidelity ADT armed response officers, who were providing security support at the bank.

Police probe shooting attempt

The suspect was apprehended and handed over to the police for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The arrest highlights the importance of co-operation between private security companies in responding to potentially dangerous situations and securing suspects until police arrive.

At the time of publication, Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo and the Plaza Complex’s communication desk were not yet aware of the incident, and FNB was not available for comment.

Masondo said he would check with the relevant police station and revert with further information.
