Cyclist has eyes set on glory

The 2014 UCI Road World Championships are currently taking place in Ponferrada, Spain.

Local rider, Willie Smit was in action yesterday for the u/23 cyclists in the 81st UCI RWC. This is the seventh time that Spain is hosting the championships.

These cycling championships consists of 12 events for elite, u/23 and junior cyclists. The course of the race is 36,15km with the start and finish in Ponferrada. All national federations may enter four riders of whom two may start. In addition to this number, the outgoing world champion and the current continental champions may take part. A total of 82 cyclists from 45 nations were scheduled to take part in the men’s u/12 time trial. 

Newly appointed road director of South Africa who also hails from Mbombela, Bosseau Boshoff ,yesterday tweeted “Big day today for @williesmurfy racing World TT Champs.” 

Smit did not as well as he wanted to, but still managed to finish 28th overall out of 63 riders.
