Cyclists meet in Spain

The cream of the crop in cycling are currently in Ponferrada in northern Spain for the UCI Road World Championships.

Local favourite Willie Smit is a member of the u/23 men’s road-race team and had his first time trial on Tuesday. He finished 28th out of 64 riders.

During one of the most anticipated weeks on the cycling calendar, men and women gather in their respective national teams for 12 action-packed races split across junior, u/23 and elite age groups. The reward for each winner is the coveted rainbow jersey and a potentially career-defining entry into their palmares.

Australia’s Campbell Flakemore, who had been 20 seconds down at the splits, produced a rousing final sector to snatch the rainbow jersey from Ryan Mullen by just 0,48 seconds.

Smit will race again today in the second time trial for the u/23 men’s road race which is a tough 182km (10 laps).
