The Janse van Vuuren family made huge waves on the bowling greens in Barberton and Mbombela on October 4 and 5.

Martie, Tinus, Shawn and Wayne participated in the Lowveld open ladies and mens singles tournament.

Eighteen open men and eighteen open ladies from the Barberton, White River, LVCC, Nelspruit, Bungalows, Malelane and Sabie clubs gathered at the different venues to determine who would be the Lowveld Singles Champion for 2014/15.

The person who reached 21 points first was the winner, and with each game that the bowler won, they were rewarded with two points. Martie played outstanding bowls, beating each player she faced with her skills. Playing against Annette Stassen from White River, she won with a score of 21/5, and then beat Marlet Ireland from Bungalows with a score of 21/13. In the finals she played against Anne Coetzee from Sabie, and was named champion of the ladies singles.

Martie’s son, Shawn was crowned as the open men singles champion with brother Wayne in second place and dad Tinus in fourth. All four family members are also Mpumalanga players, however, Shawn has made the Lowveld very proud with all the games and tournaments he won.

Singles – This is a game between two players, each playing two, three or four bowls singly and alternately. In championship matches, the first player to earn 21 points is the winner. The object is to deliver bowls closer to the jack (the small white ball) than the opponent to earn the right to score points. The player with the closest bowl to the jack earns one point, or “shot,” for each bowl closer to the jack than the nearest opponent bowl.
