Aces’ rock-solid defence stands against onslaught
Aces will be happy with the result as every away point is precious going forward to the business end of the season.
Mpumalanga Black Aces gave a rock-solid defensive display when they kept out numerous attacks from Mamelodi Sundowns in a 0-0 stalemate draw at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday November 5.
The battle between the former Bafana Bafana coaches, Aces’ Clive Barker and Sundowns’ Pitso Mosimane did not truly live up to goalscoring expectations.
Sundowns have performed poorly at home this season, while Aces have been one of the better travelling teams in the PSL of late.
Both teams started the match on edgy terms with Sundowns getting the early opportunities in Aces’ half, but Kwabena Adusei and Lehlohonolo Nonyane kept them at bay with some courageous tackling.
Sundowns enjoyed the fair share of the possession, but could not make any meaningful attacks count as Aces’ keeper Jackson Mabokgwane foiled every attempt.
Cuthbert Malajila went close to scoring the opener but saw his shot go wide of the post. Aces also had one or two good chances before the half-time break with Abia Nale shooting straight at keeper, Denis Onyango.
In the second half Sundowns seemed to come onto the pitch with more intent while Aces were determined to stop any attack dead in its tracks.
The Brazilians had numerous opportunities which they wasted in front of goal, most notably from Khama Billiat when he was sent through on goal only to clip the cross bar when scoring seemed an easier option.
Barker tried his best to inject some new life into a weary and tired-looking side when he replaced Tendai Ndoro with Mabhudi Khenyeza.
This did not bear fruit, however, as the game ended goalless with both teams sharing a point. Aces will be happy with the result as every away point is precious going forward to the business end of the season.
Their next game is against Polokwane City at the Mbombela Stadium on November 22.
