Locals saddle up to ride for a purpose
This year, some of the Lowveld's top riders will do the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge and ride for a purpose - to save the leopard.
The director of Mountain Bike for Cycling South Africa, Brett Coates, the Road Cycling Director for South Africa, Bosseau Boshoff, Ironman finisher Justin Victor, Naeem Omar, 2013 South African Cross-country Championship, Samantha Sanders and another strong MTB-rider Amy Beth McDougall will all be in action on Sunday November 16 at Riversands Commercial Park, Johannesburg.
The Ride for a Purpose campaign has proven to provide an incomparable platform for cyclists to create awareness about causes close to their hearts, and this year is no different. Over R12,5 million was raised for charity last year and this year the 94.7 Cycle Challenge encourages riders and charities to get involved, so they can top last year’s massive success. Whether you’re cycling for a charity, a personal cause like supporting a neighbour with cancer, or to raise funds for a rural school in your community, you can make a difference. This year, the race has reserved 8 000 spots for charities to register their teams and for individuals who want to ride for their favourite charity.
A total of 66 riders will be part of the Save the Leopard team and each one needs to raise R1 500 in donations totalling up
to R99 000.
What is the Leopard Conservation Project?
Fred Berrangé established the project in 2000 and together with concerned citizens has had the privilege to conserve leopard in many different areas in Southern Africa.
It has primarily been to protect them from poaching, poisoning, trapping and over-hunting. However, in recent years focus has shifted to include the collection of data on population and territory size as well as the genetic relatedness and diversity of leopard within different locations.
