Tennis boys hone skills in the Western Cape
Eight boys represented Penryn College at the Boland Landbou School Tennis Tournament which recently took place.
They had two very intense two-hour training sessions after which the team had the privilege of exploring the beautiful Western Cape (including a game of touch on Clifton beach and an enjoyable supper at the Waterfront).
A total of 12 schools took part in this annual prestigious tournament, with Penryn and Hoërskool Nelspruit representing Mpumalanga. The first match was against Durbanville High followed by a tough encounter against Paarl Gymnasium.
The team, unfortunately, lost both matches but learnt a lot. The third match was against Faremont High of Cape Town. The Penryn boys showed some true character and won this exciting encounter by three games. Ewan Tasker, Angus McQueen and Ryan Kennett won their singles matches and then the team won three of the four doubles.
Tennis captain, Ryan Thorpe and his doubles partner, Ryan won their doubles match 6/1, 7/6, Angus and Dustin Johnson won 6/2, 7/6 and Meli Thabedze and Melvin Smith won their doubles 6/2, 6/4.
Penryn’s number-one player, Callan Kenyon (grade nine) has shown that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with in years to come.
