Swimmers break two records
Penryn College's Dylan Ormiston and Kayla Schefferman was crowned junior victor ludorum and senior victrix ludorum respectively at Barberton Primary's annual swimming gala.
Swimmers of Curro College managed to break two records in the u/14 medley and the school’s Jeanne Joubert won the girl’s dash for cash.
Nine schools in the Lowveld area, Malelane, Komatipoort, White River and Nelspruit Primary, as well as Laerskool Bergland, Curro, Uplands Prep and Penryn Prep, visited Barberton on Thursday last week.
Carolien Pienaar of Uplands took home the junior victrix ludorum and Nelspruit’s star swimmer, Jethro Piso was given the trophy for senior victor ludorum. Although the sky was somewhat overcast, it did not deter the swimmers from taking to the cold water and giving it their all.
The gala took place at the Umjindi municipal swimming pool.
This public pool recently was the subject of considerable debate when it came to light that there was a possibility it might be sold and demolished in the near future.
Although the host school was unable to rake in any of the ludorum awards, some of their swimmers still did exceptionally well.
Barberton’s Grant de Jager, who swam in the category boys u/10, took three first places, a second and a third place. These were in the medley, free stroke, breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke respectively.
Another swimmer of Barberton Primary, Tuanè Silver who competed in the girls u/10, attained two second places for freestyle relay and breaststroke and two third places in medley and butterfly.
