MP Swimming Champs once again proves to be the event

Between 17 swimming clubs, there were 266 swimmers who entered for a total of 1 820 events and 52 relays.

One of the largest swimming competitions known in the Lowveld, the annual Mpumalanga Open Swimming Championships (MP Champs) at Van Riebeeck Swimming Pool again proved to be the flagship event in the province. MP Champs is a major event on the swimming calendar and took place this weekend. Between 17 swimming clubs, there were 266 swimmers who entered for a total of 1 820 events and 52 relays. Not only do all the Mpumalanga swimmers train hard towards this, and look forward to this prestigious gala, but swimmers from as far as Limpopo, Gauteng, northern KwaZulu-Natal, Mozambique and Swaziland participate at this annual provincial event. It consisted of 134 events for swimmers of all age groups.

The following were handed out

• A total of 696 medals – 232 gold, 232 silver and 232 bronze.

• Twenty-one trophies – best PDI swimmer, best multidisability swimmer, best master swimmer, best individual performance – junior male/female, best individual performance – senior

And then of course there was the infamous “dash-for-cash” event where selected swimmers were invited to swim for cash prizes awarded to the first, second and third place.
