Aces donate a brand-new soccer kit to offenders
Sport plays a vital part in the rehabilitation programmes of offenders.
In support of this notion, Mpumalanga Black Aces recently donated a brand-new soccer kit to Witbank Correctional Centre’s soccer team.
The kit consisted of jerseys, gloves, a ball, a captain’s band and a bag and was handed over to the centre by Aces liaison officer, Thulani Khumalo who added that the team has a component of social responsibility for various communities and their supporters. He added the club had visited the centre several times for matches against the offenders where they identified potential players within the offenders’ teams.
Khumalo said he believed that giving back to society built their brand, relationships and promotes respect for the Department of Correctional Services officers as the mentors of offenders. In his words of encouragement, he urged offenders to respect and cooperate with officials at the correctional centres and make use of every opportunity available.
According to Moses Nkabinde, spokesperson for the centre, offenders have their own internal league of eight clubs where official games took place on weekends. Four offenders’ soccer squads, from Belfast, Middelburg, Carolina and Witbank respectively, will engage in spectacular competitive soccer games soon.
