Junior golfers enjoyed a productive day as they embarked in the Steel Image Mpumalanga Junior Golf Open Championships at Nelspruit Golf Club last Sunday. The competition comprised three divisions which was played in a 36-hole medal format (A and B) and an 18-hole IPS (individual points Stableford) format (C) respectively.

A medal format is similar to stroke play where your shots are counted and IPS, also known as Stableford, is where your score is determined on the number of strokes at each hole. In the A division, Schalk Grobler took first place with a total of 142 shots after 36 holes, thus finishing his day off on par. Hot on his heels with a thrilling one-shot difference was Brandon Geere on 143 being one over par. Seven shots behind him was Ivan Maré with a total of 150, which secured him a third place on the log.

In the B division, Corné Combrink’s 167 shots secured him first place. Only two shots behind the leader was Branden Borcher on 169. Frikkie Fenshan and Amukelani Khoza were neck and neck in the C division, but it was Fenshan’s two-point lead that put him on the top of the podium.

Khoza ended his day on 28 points.
