PSL returns to the Lowveld
The state-of-the-art Mbombela Stadium is gearing up for more Premier Soccer League (PSL) action scheduled to commence next Saturday.
This stadium will continue where it left off last year with the first official PSL kick-off on Saturday when home team, Mpumalanga Back Aces take on Pretoria-based side, Supersport United.
The two teams will battle it out for three points in a return match in the Absa Premiership. Aces won the first leg played in Pretoria 2-1. During a tour at the stadium, the pitch was in perfect playable condition and the grass was green and well trimmed for a soccer match.
“We are ready for action, whether it’s soccer or rugby,” said Mthuthuzeli Qamba, the stadium’s official spokesperson. “The African Cup of Nations tournament has given us ample time to give much-needed attention to the pitch. And as you can see it is just stunning,” he continued.
Under the current leadership, led by Roelf Kotze, this stadium has seen a lot of game time, surpassing other stadiums built for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Besides PSL official games and Fifa international friendlies, it has played host to a number of rugby matches, including the Castle Incoming Tour between South Africa and Wales.
This stadium is also home to the Steval Pumas which will continue to host big names in domestic rugby such as the Lions, Free State Cheetahs, Western Province and the Blue Bulls. The second official game here will be on February 18 between Aces and Maritzburg United when they meet in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup.
“We are also going to have a lovers’ special since this is the month of love. Couples can buy two tickets for the price of one. “This special will only be for the Aces/Supersports game on Valentine’s Day and those special tickets will only be sold at the stadium, not at Computicket outlets. Couples must accompany each other when buying tickets,” concluded Qamba.
