Launch of Sanlam Cancer Challenge a great success
Combine a beautiful golf course, golf lovers and a great cause and you've got a golf day to aid in the fight against cancer.
Players raced around on golf carts and worked on their handicap during the launch of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge on February 21. The nationwide initiative gives golfers and clubs the opportunity to enjoy their favourite sport and help CANSA in the fight against cancer.
To introduce the concept to the players of Hazyview and surrounds, the Kruger Park Lodge Golf Club hosted an 18-hole better-ball Stableford format competition. About 48 players participated, with a group of women from CANSA Nelspruit providing support in the form of sunscreen and drinks.
Over lunchtime, players took a break from the heat and competition and enjoyed prego rolls in the shade of the lodge’s restaurant. After the competition, players had their hair shaved or sprayed and gave a donation to CANSA to raise awareness and show solidarity with cancer survivors.
The event was concluded with a dinner and prize-giving ceremony, in which the best golfers were awarded prizes sponsored by Sanlam.
Results:
• First place: Lloyd and Timothy Townsend with 46 points
• Second place: Jan van Tonder and Marlene Miln with 46 points
• Third place: Jaco van Rooyen and Hugo Bothma with 45 points.
• Nearest to pin on holes 5 and 14: Lloyd Townsend
• Nearest to pin on holes 7 and 16: Hugo Bothma
To help raise more funds for CANSA, Ernie Els red wines were auctioned off during the dinner.
Golfers are invited to return to the course to participate in the Kruger Park Lodge Golf Club Sanlam Cancer Tournament scheduled for June 20.
