Small running club boast a very big heart
Legogote Villagers is a White River-based running club. It was founded in 1984, and last year they celebrated their 30th birthday.
As clubs dwindled and folded in the surrounding areas, Legogote assisted by taking over many of the races to keep running alive. Its members keep increasing, with 90 at present.
“We refer to ourselves as the ‘small club with a big heart’. We can be seen at all the races standing and running together in our very distinct red gear.
Recently we acquired a huge red gazebo named Bob that travels all over with us.
On Comrades morning you will always see the “Good morning, White River” banner held by some of our runners as they begin this long run.
It has become a popular focus for television cameras on the day and they always look out for us,” says Janine Bethwaite, a member of the club.
Some of their events are:
• Time trials every Thursday from the clubhouse in White River at 17:30 – everyone is welcome to come and test themselves against other runners and walkers – 4,6 or eight kilometres
• Saturday morning runs – anything from 10 to 30 kilometres, depending on your preference and the time of the year
• Sunday morning runs – from 14 to 28 kilometres
• Moonlight runs on the first Monday night with a full moon – four kilometres
• Pub runs in December – lots of fun as the club dress up and run to three or four different local pubs
• Comrades long-training run – the athletes run from White River to Sabie.
