Tenth Selati Cup to be even bigger
A total of 288 teams have already been registered, but according to Phiri they were only interested in four
On Tuesday afternoon RCL Foods announced the return of the 10th edition of the much-adored local amateur football tournament, the Selati Cup.
During a meeting with Kenneth Phiri from RCL Foods, small issues were ironed out between the company and the Nkomazi Local Football Association (NKLFA).
“We are ready to crown the 10th Selati Cup champion. By June 5 we have our champion and it is definitely going to be worth the participation of all teams and players,” Phiri said.
He added that they wanted to unearth and groom local soccer stars. “The next Khune, Tshabalala, or Danial Peters could be in our communities. We want to find them and prepare them for replacing the currently soccer stars.”
Phiri said the tournament would be much bigger this year and they intended on making it more exciting.
“This year’s prize-money package is way more exciting than it has ever been the previous years. If it happens that one of the teams which have won the tournament the previous years, become this year’s champions, they will receive a bonus win.”
A total of 288 teams have already been registered, but according to Phiri they were only interested in four.
“We only want four teams who will compete for the fish’s head. Everyone else matters but we are only interested in the last four, and we don’t know who that will be yet. But we are looking forward to a thrilling tournament.”
The date for teams to start submitting their entries has not yet been announced, however, preparations to make it fair play are underway.
“Currently we are finalising the puzzle on how to make the entry system fair to all teams. Not favourable to some and not to others. It has to be what we call fair play all around,” Phiri added.
He thanked the community which had supported them over the years, saying, had it it not been for the people, the tournament would have stopped existing altogether.
“This tournament has became part of this community’s sports calendar, and is truly a tournament of our people. We hope that the communities will welcome all the RCL Foods brands into their houses,” Phiri concluded.
