MRU appoints experienced junior-development coach

Mpumalanga Rugby Union (MRU) announced the appointment of a new junior-development officer on Wednesday. Devril Boucher, who joined last week, will focus mainly on talent identification and development among the junior players and women.
His aim is to create opportunities for these players and further their careers as professional rugby players.
“My vision in this new challenge is to assist in the development of more coloured rugby players in this predominantly soccer-playing province,” Boucher said.
“I hope to create opportunities within the structures to widen their enthusiasm for the sport. I think my biggest challenge will be the demographics of the province.”
Boucher is a former John Bisseker High School pupil and lived for most of his school and working career in East London. He represented the South African Rugby Union Border Provincial team as fly half from 1986 until 1992 and continued to play club rugby for East London Police between 2000 and 2006.
“Sport has been a passion of mine. As a player, you have to decide when to hang up your boots, but also to have a plan B. Mine was to get involved in coaching and development,” he said.
He made his mark as coach of the u/21 East London Police team which made the provincial finals for three years in a row. He also coached the Border u/19 team in 2006, from which two Springboks emerged, Bjorn Basson and Lwazi Mvovo.
Boucher said his love of the sport and children drives him every day.
“I believe the recent success of the professional team will play a huge role in the success of the province. And I would love to be a part of this new era,” he said.
