Karatekas train for their black belts

Hazyview Dojo prepare for grading.

A black belt does not come without determination, discipline and perseverance. Karatekas from the Hazyview Dojo trained for their black belt this past weekend.
On Saturday May 28 sensei John Barnett from the Gauteng region came to White River to prepare the candidates for their grading in October. According to sensei Sandra Jansen van Vuuren, owner of the Hazyview Dojo, the training was intense and focused on strength and breathing.
The Hazyview karatekas preparing for their black belts are Vincent Calaca, Hugo Lusse and Patricia Hanekom. Jansen van Vuuren said many students start karate, but only a handful have the dedication and perseverance to achieve their black belts.
“These students don’t only work in class but train at home and attend extra classes on Saturday at the White River Dojo of sensei Piet Venter. The grading is preceded by four days of intense training and the students are evaluated before the actual grading. Eight hours of fighting and kata per day are to test their fitness and commitment,” said Jansen van Vuuren.
