Coetzee dominates annual fight night

In the main bout, Eben Bothma of Lowveld Kickboxing Club fought Duval Coetzer of Wolves Martial Arts.

The latter capped off the evening with a gutsy performance.

Round one started off at a frantic pace, with Coetzer moving forward, throwing a lot of punches and putting his opponent under pressure early in the round.

After warding off the initial onslaught from Bothma, Wolves Martial Arts student started taking control of the round by landing clean punches and head kicks to put Bothma on the back foot.

Coetzer started the second round by landing a big punch and forcing Bothma to the corner before dropping him with a punch. Fatigue started to kick in and Coetzer capitalised by breaking through Bothma’s defence and landing some heavy uppercuts, forcing two blood stoppages in the round.

The last round started with both fighters showing a lot of heart, throwing and landing strikes. Bothma was pulled to the corner for a standing eight count by the referee. The fight was stopped shortly after yet another blood stoppage giving Coetzer the win.

Clubs from Secunda, Middelburg XKT, Lowveld Fight Club, Barberton, Wolves Martial Arts and White River Kickboxing participated.

More than 70 members of all clubs attended a development training programme earlier in the day. The overall first- and second-place trophies for the day’s team sessions were awarded to Antonie Hattingh, Jaco Louw, JJ van Dyk and Wesley Grobler.
