WRRC gets Gold Cup campaign underway
White River Rugby Club (WRRC) will face Old Georgians Harare in round one of the Gold Cup which starts this weekend.
Last year they narrowly managed to beat Nelspruit Rugby Club in the Mpumalanga Club Rugby League final on the latter’s home turf.
With loads of determination and supporters’ shouts of encouragement cheering them on, White River walked off the field with a winning score of 35-34. This feat earned them the trophy as Mpumalanga Club Rugby League champions.

“We know we have not performed at our very best throughout the Ehlanzeni League, but we ended much better than we started. Over the last couple of weeks we had good training sessions. Every player knows what he needs to do,” said team manager Bennie Pringle.
SA Rugby confirmed the pool draw for this year’s Gold Cup national championships for non-university clubs which kicks off today.

The local team, that was part of the former Community Cup in 2013, will be joined in Pool B by False Bay, top Western Province non-university club last year, Durban Collegians, KwaZulu-Natal champs and Valke.
The Gold Cup will kick off today with 20 clubs with five weeks of pool stages and the top two from each group progressing to the knockout stages.
It will feature 47 matches in all.
“We would like to invite the whole Lowveld community to come support our boys,” said Pringle.
WRRC will host the Zimbabwean side. Kick-off is at 15:40.
