Caddies have the birdies flying at the sixth annual challenge

White River Country Club's William Shongwe of team Hi-Q claimed the sixth annual Caddies Challenge title.

A total of 40 caddies from Mbombela, Barberton, White River, Hazyview and Malalane took to the course on

Monday at Nelspruit Golf Club (NGC). It was played in an individual stableford, off-scratch handicap format.

“We want to thank the club and the sponsors for making this day possible. We hope to see you again next year. To my fellow caddies, keep up the good work,” said Lawrence Mdluli, “spokesman” for the caddies.

Fourball of Standard Bank, Zweli Nkosi, Andrew Ngubane, George Mashego and Anton Chibi were victorious as a team with 108 followed by Hi-Q’s Shongwe, Chris Mkhonto, Themba Khoza and Elvis Sihlangu with 101.

Shongwe made two birdies off the first nine on the second and fifth. He later slipped with bogeys on the third, 15th and 18th.

George Mashego, also of White River took second place with 34 points.

On the back nine he made three consecutive bogeys, but managed to get his head back in the game with birdies on 14 and 15.

“From the caddies, as well as the club, thanks to everyone who was involved, especially for the effort in organising this day. It doesn’t go unseen. Thanks to the caddies for their hard work throughout the year,” general manager of NGC, Darren Plumb said.

“Thank you to all for your contribution. I believe this day was a great success and that the hampers will make Christmas tastes so much sweeter,” Nick Elliot of Ulusha Projects said.
