Local club hosts first qualifier

A number of local riders from Mbombela Cowboys recently competed in the first qualifier of the Western Mounted Games (WMG) at Chris Ranch.

Clubs as far as Johannesburg and Bethal made their way to the Lowveld.

The second qualifying round will take place early March in Ermelo, with the Lowveld hosting the event again on June 10.

“We had over 40 entrants from Bethal Polo X, Highveld Drifters, Highveld Equestrian Club, Trichardt Equestrian Club and Brumbies respectively. It was a very successful day and everyone had a great time. Western Mounted Games is quite new in the Lowveld and we would like to promote this exciting sport,” said coach of Mbombela Cowboys, Christo Steyl.

If the riders accumulate enough points after the qualifying rounds, they will get selected for the provincial team to represent Mpumalanga at the South African Western Mounted Games Association (SAWMGA) later this year.

Anyone who is interested in joining the local club, can phone Christo on 082-670-6230.
