Fans treated to a weekend of red-hot soccer action

Several new records were set up by teams and players over the past weekend's Selati Cup matches, providing fans with hours of great football entertainment.

Schulzendal Eleven Experience set up a new Selati Cup record for most goals scored by a team in a match at KaMhlushwa Stadium on Sunday. They thumped Mzinti Real Madrid, 14-0.

These teams were two of 38 which played in matches over the weekend, hoping for a spot in the final 64.

Sanele Khanyile, of Schulzendal Eleven Experience, also set up a new record for most goals scored by a single player in a match, by scoring six of his team’s 14 goals and is this tournament’s top goalscorer. His closest competitor is Lazarus Masinga from Driekoppies Barcelona with three goals, followed by several players with two.

Nineteen teams joined those that qualified over the past two weekends and the draw for the top-64 took place on Monday.

“Only the best teams have made it through to the next round,” said tournament organiser and RCL Foods representative, Kenneth Phiri.

Teams have just over a month left until the top-16 matches, with the quarter-finals scheduled for May 21, semi-finals for the weekend after that and the final on June 4.

On Sunday afternoon, football fans packed the KaMhlushwa Stadium for a SAB Regional League clash between Real Madrid and Buffelspruit All Blacks. It ended in a goalless draw.

Meanwhile in the Nedbank Cup, Acornbush United will take on Kaizer Chiefs at KaBokweni Stadium on Sunday, with the venue expected to be packed with fans.
