Chairman’s Day at Sabie Bowling Club

It was certainly a Chairman’s Day with a difference, on Monday, May 1 as Sabie Bowling Club celebrated Workers Day with a real 'work out'.

Jerry Gertzen from LVCC Bowling Club was part of the day. He is reputedly the only active accredited technical officer in the Lowveld.

The day started with a short talk about the importance of lawn bowls and etiquette, and then Gertzen and the 17 participants, including some eager developing bowlers from Nelspruit, and
Marion Robertson from Bungalows Club in Hazyview, descended to the green, to learn about the
importance of warming-up, and to put into practice what they were taught.

The bowlers then had a short coaching session regarding one’s delivery, followed by some fun, to put this all into practice, with a number of exercises, somewhat akin to target bowls, to emphasise the importance of the drawing shot in lawn bowls.

Thereafter the bowlers split into six teams to play ten ends of trips, with a difference, as there were 10 points available per end, awarded to the four bowls, closest to the jack, regardless of which team delivered them, making 100 points available in total.

The winning team consisted of Riana van der Stigchel, Anne Coetzee and Leonard Sherriff, followed
home by Chris Colverd, Jerry Gertzen and Kerry Knoesen.
