Top 16 Selati Cup matches start off with drama
Referees were concerned for their safety after players tried to attack a linesman after the first of the weekend's Selati Cup top 16 matches.
The weekend’s top-16 Selati Cup matches started out rather dramatically when players tried to attack a linesman.
After the first match on Saturday at KaMaqhekeza Stadium, a linesman had to run for his life. He judged an offside against Sambo Block B during their match against KaMhlushwa City Stars and it ended on 0-0, with City Stars winning 3-2 on penalties. Players of Sambo Block B chased him after the final whistle and tried to attack him. He had to be taken into police custody for his own safety.
The second match was delayed as referees raised concerns about their safety, following the incident at the previous match.
The Nkomazi Local Football Association’s secretary, Collence Silabela said they were able to calm the situation and reassure the referees that they were safe due to the presence of police.
The matches continued and Tonga Chelsea scored their first goal within the first seconds of the game against Driekoppies City Royal. It was the only goal of the match and they won 1-0.
Mananga Royal City also moved through to the next round, after a 3-0 win against Block A United.
Driekoppies Barcelona and Mbokodo Wanderers had to play out once again after Barcelona lodged a protest against Wanderers for using a cup tied player. Their first match was played at KaMhlushwa Stadium on April 30 and ended in a two-goal tie. Wanderers won with a penalty score of 3-2.
After a disciplinary hearing, a rematch was set for 15:00 at Driekoppies Stadium on Saturday and Barcelona won the match by 3-2.
Driekoppies Barcelona and KaMhlushwa Real Madrid will play their top-16 catch-up match on Saturday at Driekoppies Stadium to determine which team qualify for the quarter-finals.

The weekend’s winners are now one match closer to the Selati Cup and will face each other in the semi-finals on May 21.
