Sports tournament aims to encourage healthy hobbies among youth

The police and SA National Defence Force (SANDF) hosted a sports day in Komatipoort last Friday to encourage local youth to stay away from drugs and get healthy hobbies.

The Komatipoort sports grounds were abuzz with community members, soldiers and police during a Youth Against Drug Abuse event on Friday morning.

The SAPS and the SANDF jointly organised a 2,5-kilometre fun walk and a five-kilometre fun run. The first five athletes over the finish line were awarded medals. Roscoe Farms, the Nkomazi Local Municipality and Old Mutual also helped to organise and sponsor this initiative.

SAPS, SANDF and members of the community competed against one another in netball, soccer and volleyball. Despite tough competition, it was a lot of fun.

After all the activities, SANDF, SAPS and the South African Narcotics Bureau did presentations on drug abuse and its effects on the community. A few former drug addicts shared their experiences in the hope of preventing others from following the same path.
