Local riders end the 2017 season on a high

Team NAD's Gawie Combrinck and Nico Bell obliterated the third and final stage of the FNB Wines2Whales (W2W), securing an overall third place with a time of 8:06:03.

The final stage saw a change of the overall leaders and a dramatic conclusion to this three-day race to end their 2017 season on the podium.

“It’s always nice fishing at the sea,” said Bell.

“W2W is a really enjoyable race. Now we plan to reset and hopefully have a good year in 2018.”

Earlier this year, they crossed the finish line in the 2017 Cape Epic finale as second-place finishers in the Absa African Jersey category.

Team Valencia Ladies’ Samantha Sanders and Amy McDougall rounded-off the podium, with an overall third position in the W2W mountain-biking race open ladies category with a time of 9:20:56.

“Our plan was to do our best,” said Sanders.

“You can only go as hard as the body allows you to. Our effort was good enough for third place. The event has been awesome. W2W really is incredible. The trails are immaculate.”

“I need to work on my sprinting skill,” laughs McDougall. “There was a lot of pain, but W2W was a lot of fun.”
