NPS hosts LSEN athletics meeting

Nelspruit Primary was the host for this year’s LSEN athletics meeting, which saw 14 schools test their mettle last week.

206 athletes, pupils from Nelspruit Primary, Pro Gratia, Laerskool Barberton and Laerskool Witrvier did their schools proud with excellent performances on both the track and field.
The meeting included sprints, high jump, long jump, long distance, hammer throw (but with a tennis ball in a stocking instead), and to top things off, a slip and slide. Complimentary iced lollies were handed out throughout the event, as a measure to beat the Lowveld’s heat.
“Each athlete gets a certificate for their participation and the top three receive medals,” said the organiser of the day, Debbie Jooste.
“Though the day was competitive to a degree, it was held mostly for fun,” said Debbie and added that it gives children with special educational needs the exposure to the range of activities found at any normal athletics meeting.
“The biggest goal is exposure, participation and reward for their hard work,” she said.
The next meeting will be held at Laerskool Tasbetpark in eMalahleni.
