Olifante come out on top in clashes against Barberton

Both of Malelane Rugby Club's teams were victorious against Barberton by scoring seven tries each during Saturday's league match in Malalane.

Rugby fans from Malalane and Barberton gathered at the Malelane Rugby Club on Saturday to watch the two teams from each town face off in league matches.

Malelane’s second team was up first and scored 41 points to Barberton’s 17.

The teams both started up with tight defence formations but Malelane broke through to put the first seven points on the scoreboard.

Barberton followed it up quickly with a try of their own.

Malelane managed another two tries and one successful conversion before half-time.

The second half started off with both teams tightening their defence once again. Malelane scored another try, but the conversion was unsuccessful. Barberton fought back hard to add seven more points to their score.

Great teamwork and timing, earned Malelane three more tries and one successful conversion.

Barberton scored their third try of the game, despite tough opposition, but their time for counterattack ran out.

Malelane and Barberton’s first teams proved very evenly matched but Malelane’s final try earned them a 43-34 victory.

Although Barberton fought hard to get to the try line first, Malelane managed to beat their defence for the first try of the game.

Malelane scored another try and Barberton retaliated, managing three tries. The rest of the game followed a similar pattern, with neither team managing a comfortable point advantage.

The Olifante ended the game with a couple of spectacular tries, utilising the players’ speed, agility, adaptability and teamwork.

Local fans can look forward to more rugby action tomorrow, when Malelane takes the Impalas on in the second Onderberg Cup match in Komatipoort. The match starts at 15:30 and all supporters all welcome. Entrance is R10 per person.
