Beacon’s best show their soccer skill at school’s new tournament
Beacon College's soccer players had supporters on the edge of their seats when they faced Bela Bela High in the finals of the school's new tournament last Friday.
Despite an excellent showing by the home team, Beacon College, the disciplined Bela Bela High team managed to score a goal for a 0-1 victory in the finals of the Beacon College Soccer Tournament last Friday.
Beacon College invited soccer teams from Curro Karino near Mbombela, Kings School in White River and Bela Bela High to participate in the school’s first major soccer tournament at the Malelane Rugby Club.
They aimed to give their players an opportunity to face opponents from similar types of schools, expose them to a friendly competition environment and promote the sport.
Netball players from the school also had the opportunity to compete in a few matches on the nearby netball field and share in the excitement.

Beacon faced Curro Karino in the first match of the day and managed to score their first goal late in the first half, to the absolute delight of the spectators.
A few minutes into the second half, Beacon scored another goal and Karino’s players became more ruthless in their pursuit to catch up. They scored two goals to equalize, so the match had to be decided on penalties.
Despite a dispute causing the penalty shoot-out to be redone, Beacon was victorious.

Kings School and Bela Bela High were up next and the Limpopo school impressed spectators with their excellent teamwork and discipline. This earned them the victory with six goals to none and a spot in the finals.
After a break, Curro Karino and Kings School took each other on, tying at one goal each. Karino won the penalty shoot-out. However, Kings School was named team of the tournament.

Beacon’s team proved that they have potential for greatness this year when they managed to keep up with Bela Bela in the finals. The Limpopo school represented their province in the COPA Coca-Cola National finals in September last year.
Bela Bela had the majority of possession during the match, but both teams were blocked from scoring thanks to excellent saves by their goalkeepers.

The teams and excellent players were rewarded with T-shirts, trophies, medals and other goodies.
The school sincerely thanks all of their sponsors for their generosity.
Beacon College hopes to host the tournament annually and aims to invite more schools next year.
