Barberton Gateway learners excel

Learners from Barberton’ Gateway Combined Christian School took part in the regional chess competition hosted in Machadodorp at Chazon Tekna Private School over the weekend. 

According to sports coordinator and Southern African Christian School’s Sports Association Mpumalanga representative, Brandt Ehlers, this has been an exceptional day for Gateway learners.

He said they took gold in all the age categories as well as a few silver and bronze medals.

The overall winner of the day in the u/19 was Junior Marakalla, who is also a learner from Gateway. Ten students qualified to take part in the national chess competition that will be held later this year,” said Ehlers.

Learners who qualified for the national championship are Ruan Fourie, Kago Marakalla, Shanre Ehlers, Saskia Sidor, Kylie Stewart, Daniella Strauss, Mpendulo Nkosi, Hyejeong Shim, Juan Fourie and Junior Marakalla.

Results were as follows:
•U/9: Ruan Fourie (gold)
•U/11: Kago Marakalla (gold)
•U/13: Shanre Ehlers (silver), Saskia Sidor (silver) and Kylie Stewart (gold)
•U/19: Hyejeong Shim (bronze), Juan Fourie (silver) and Junior Marakalla (gold).
