Epic clash of the sticks between young and old at Penryn Hockey Festival

The youngsters put up a determined performance but were beaten by the alumni team's experience.

The Penryn College Founders’ Hockey Festival was a not-to-be-missed affair which saw Penryn alumni returning to the field to square off against the girls and boys’ first teams. Spectators lined the hockey field to catch the action-packed matches, which were nothing short of a thrill-a-minute hockey spectacular.

The younger teams were pitted against their older, more experienced counterparts and the hockey skills displayed proved that muscle memory and experience were more than just a match for the younger sides. The spectators, mostly from the younger Penryn classes, cheered their teams on, and they provided a spirited performance against alumni sides who had a number of provincial-level players on their team.

The matches were played on Friday and Saturday, and three Penryn players in each age division were selected to represent the school at Saints.

The first team’s boys’ hockey coach, Michael Doumanis, said, “The match was a fantastic experience. The alumni and first team enjoyed the festive atmosphere and support. Next year’s match must definitely be played under lights.

“It was a tough game for the boys because they played at a very high level. The alumni team had a number of provincial players in their team and in the end it helped them to a well deserved win.

“The first team held their own for long periods of the game and played with good spirit. We look forward to playing them again next year and appreciate the effort they made to come and play us.”
