IN PHOTOS: Nelspruit Boxing Club hosts first tourney

Lawrence Baird, co-founder of the club, said he was very pleased with the first tournament and especially the breath of fresh air it breathed into the Lowveld.

The newly established Nelspruit Boxing Club, now consisting of more than 100 members, saw its very first tournament this past weekend.

The tournament was well organised with superb bouts. Mpumalanga won six of the seven international bouts against Swaziland, but could only win one of five interprovincial bouts against Gauteng.

Standouts for the province were Lebo Nkambule and Nathi Gama, who both beat their Swazi opponents by stoppage. Jimmy Tshehla also boxed exceptionally well, beating his bigger Swazi foe on points. Nelspruit boxers Zander de Jager and Christian Kleinhans also fared well in interclub bouts against opponents from Gert Sibande and Nkangala.

Although they lost, it was the Nelspruit club’s first tournament and they put up gallant performances.|

“We have been invited to go box in Sasolburg in October and we are hoping to host our next event in December this year,” Baird said.
