Survival tips for parents attending this year’s Interhigh

Schools in the Mbombela district will come together on Saturday February 22 to compete against one another. Every parent needs to know a thing or two in order to join in the fun.

Here are a few tips for parents and spectators:

Before you go

Get your tickets before game day. It is not a great idea to purchase tickets on the day. Tickets can be purchased at participating schools. Arrive early at the venue (Hoerskool Bergvlam) and sit in the seat allocated by the ticket. You can download a map of what is happening where here.

What to wear

Make sure you wear the correct colours of your child’s school. Wear hats and apply sunscreen on yourself and your children. The South Africa Weather Service forecasts a thunderstorm on Saturday, so bring an umbrella along.

What to pack

Have enough money in your wallet – there will be lots to eat and drink. Otherwise pack more than enough food and snacks. Carry a cooler with ice to cool the children’s drinks and yours. Proper hydration is vital.
Make sure your phone is fully charged to take pictures or record videos. You don’t want to miss such golden moments. Bring along a powerbank, in case your battery runs down while the game is on.

Sportsmanship tips

  • Before the  athletics meets encourage your children to play hard but have fun. At the end, avoid picking on their mistakes. Rather ask how their day went.
  • Do not yell at the field marshals, respective school coaches or athletes. They are there for a reason and they are watching the athletics too. They can handle any situation.

  • Cheer appropriately – don’t cheer for only your child during the Interhigh, rather cheer the entire school team.
  • Respect the other school’s athletes. If your children’s school wins, don’t overdo the celebrating in front of others. Losing does not feel good.
  • Commend the other teams’ athletes, whether they lost or won. Such good comments make them feel they did their best after all.

Interhigh is a few days away. How are you preparing for it?
