The battle for top honours in the annual Liberty Life Mbombela Golf Club Championships was fought at the club over the weekend.

The format was medal, also known as stroke play – a scoring system in which the total number of strokes is counted, from tee off until it is in the cup.Markus Myburgh created an early lead and was the overnight forerunner after a round of 69 on Saturday, leading by one shot over Stephan Potgieter. Hot on Potgieter’s heals, going around the course in 72 shots, was last year’s winner, Corné Olivier.

After play on Sunday, Olivier was declared the A-division winner with 141 shots after a round of 69 shots on day two. This meant that he pipped Myburgh at the post by playing four shots fewer than him, beating him with one shot.

Potgieter had a long day on the course on Sunday, and fell behind by eight shots to end in third after five bogeys and one double bogey – one shot ahead of professional golfer Divan de Villiers.
