53rd Jock: In memory of fallen VIP legends
It retained its reputation for being the best when more than 600 golfers competed and over 1 000 rounds were played from the Sunday to Saturday.

At age 53, the annual Jock is still said to be one of the best and largest amateur tournaments of its kind in the world.
Last week it retained its reputation for being the best when more than 600 golfers competed and over 1 000 rounds were played from the Sunday to Saturday.
It once again proved that it is more than just a golf tournament, but a meeting place where friendships are made and renewed – some spanning the entire 53 years.
In 2020, history was made when the Jock, like all other sporting events, had to be cancelled for the first time since its birth in 1967.
But, the Jock 2021 committee with Chalmers Pagiwe as convener, made sure that Jock 2021 would be a great success and a memorable one, which it indeed was.
This year the tournament was held in honour of four fallen Jock VIP legends, Jörn Goldenbogen, John Douglas, Peter Charls and
Dr John Luyt.
Jörn Goldenbogen (past Jock convener and Jock committee member.)
This affable German gentleman, a long-standing member of Mbombela Golf Club, was convinced to the day that Germany never lost the world wars, but came second. Sadly, Jörn succumbed to complications following a severe back injury and ultimately presumed Covid-19.
Jörn never shied away from any duty requested of him and found his niche as an all-day Jock starter. Always witty, cheerful and smiling face.
John Douglas (past club captain, past president, Jock convener and honorary life member.)
John was a warm man and a party animal and was happy to assist in coordinating and promoting this great tournament.
After many a Jock “organisational late-night session” he was known for his favourite saying: “OK, let’s have a stand- up loopdop”.
Peter Charls (Past captain and Jock convener)
Tragically a life cut short. A direct man who loved golf, his
friends, Mbombela Golf Club and the Jock. Always willing to assist wherever needed and jointly responsible for many changes on the course itself. Peter was deeply involved in the ongoing transformation processes of Mbombela Golf Club and must be complimented for this.
Dr John Luyt (past captain, past president, Jock convener, honorary life member, chairman of greens committee, founder Jockite, doyen of the Jock and sage to all.)
John was a man among men, a big man, a stubborn old bugger who invariably got his point across.
John helped build Mbombela Golf Club and the Jock and unselfishly devoted his entire life to golf and the friendships that he made.
John was a gentleman to the last and we were all very sad to hear of his passing, as he was a great friend to all.
