Menno Malherbe masters Lowveld Mid-Amateur Open

He beat Derek Scullard, playing out of Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club, by a single stroke.

Menno Malherbe of Wingate Park Country Club shot rounds of 72 and 73 for a championship winning three over par total of 145 at the Lowveld Mid-Amateur Open at Mbombela Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday.

He beat Derek Scullard, playing out of Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club, by a single stroke.

Scullard carded rounds of 73 and 73.

CMR Golf Club’s Stanley Whitten and White River Country Club’s Jaco van der Watt tied for third on six over par 147.

Van der Watt was the leader after the first day. He shot a two under par 69.

Whitten shot par to be in second place after 18 holes.

Malherbe and Scullard were tied for third after the first round.

Van der Watt’s game fell apart in the second round on Sunday, with his 78 eventually only good enough for third.

Whitten also battled in the second round, shooting 76.
