Greeff scores two tries which led to the victory
The Steval Pumas kicked off the penultimate round of the inaugural SuperSport Rugby Challenge against the seriously depleted Windhoek Draught Welwitschias at the Hage Geingob Stadium on Saturday.
Eighthman of the Pumas, Carel Greeff scored two tries which led to a victory of 42-8.
The Pumas started on the front foot, giving the ball a lot of air and running challenging lines.
The Welwitschias were committed to their first-time tackles and managed to contain the men from Mbombela until a line-out error in the 10th minute allowed Emile Temperman to open the scoreboard with a try. Kobus Marais converted.
JP Lewis scored the second after breaking on the blind side, following a strong Pumas scrum with Marais adding the two points.
The visitors continued to pile on the pressure, but several handling errors helped the Namibians to keep the score line respectable until Greeff wrestled over after a strong drive by the forwards.
The visitors led 21-0 by half-time.
After their traditional shirt change, the Pumas started the second half in very much the same way they started the game, with only resolute defence from the Welwitschias denying two threatening attacks in the first five minutes, before debutant Francois Kleynhans scored another well-worked forward try. Sias Ebersohn replaced Marias and was successful with the conversion.

Eventually, after almost 20 minutes into the second half, the Welwitschias’s discipline in the line-out let them down.
From the resulting short-arm penalty, the Pumas opted for the scrum and set the scene for Greeff’s second five pointer.
Ebersohn was again on target with the conversion.
The Welwitschias’ ongoing pressure resulted in a penalty, and captain Winmar Rust opened the score board for his team.
The Pumas went on the attack from the restart, but a last-gasp turnover allowed Dirk von Weidts to score a runaway try and bring the Hage Gaigob Stadium crowd to their feet.
The touchline conversion was a step too far for Rust.
Jannie Stander rounded off some sustained pressure by the Pumas and scored a try on the final whistle with Ebersohn adding the two points.
The Pumas will face the Hino Valke at Mbombela Stadium this Saturday. Kick-off is at 15:00.
